Here is a VMM (Volunteer Militia of Maine) cartridge box plate excavated near Winchester, Virginia. The Maine militia was organized in 1851 and restructured in 1861 to arm and equip ten regiments of troops for Federal service. Most, or all, of those Maine troops were issued state equipment bearing VMM waist belt accoutrement plates and cartridge box plates. The waist belt plates were small in compliance with the US 1839 model. The cartridge box plate, larger than the belt plate, also conformed to Federal 1839 regs. This plate was die-stamped and lead filled encasing an iron wire attachment device for affixing to the cartridge box flap. Many excavated examples exhibit rough condition. Measures approximately 57 x 87mm.
