Federal fuze pouch

Standard Federal issue artillery fuze pouch made by Watervliet Arsenal. This one is in excellent condition except for the end piece of the latch tab. Front flap shows some localized surface scarring. Stitching is great and leather is supple. The fuze box was not designed for a cartridge box plate but this example has one. The plate was double-stamped, a cool side benefit. Who and when it was attached is a mystery--soldier, Bannermans, post-war collector? All we can be sure of is that it was applied a long time ago. It was attached the same way plates were put on cartridge boxes with a piece of rawhide threaded through the loops on the reverse side of the flap.

CS Holster

This is a very nice russet military flap holster. There are no rivets or buttons--no metal at all. Belt attachment is via vertical slits on reverse. Shape conforms to a Colt Army revolver, but other US and CS handguns would also fit nicely. Good condition. Toe is missing and has been, probably since the war.

Script NY belt rig

Pre-war New York militia units were a proud lot--many in number and well-equipped and uniformed. Their uniforms bore distinctive three-piece state motif buttons, set off with state motif insignia. Their accoutrement belts and boxes were adorned with plates bearing SNY and other New York emblems such as this example. This plate was popular with New York officers from the mid-1850s through the end of the war. This specimen has seen some use and even bears an old brown-ink tag glued to it that states Officers belt and plate. New York State 1845." The date is in error as this variant of the script NY is believed to date to mid-war. The belt has tear in the back but otherwise is intact with a few cracks and chips (visible in pics.) Overall, leather is supple and in acceptible condition.

Confederate Cartridge Box and Cap Box

In my decades of collecting and photographing artifacts for publications I have never seen a finer unmarked Confederate cartridge box than this one. The box and shoulder belt are in pristine condition. The cap box, affixed onto the shoulder belt by the Johnny who carried it, is also in excellent condition. It has a single wide belt loop on reverse. The tabs on both boxes show that the rig was used, but none of the parts are torn, broken, or beaten-up. Both boxes have lead finials. The reddish brown belt was inked with the soldiers' name--but not all of it is legible, unfortunately. The interior one-piece tin with four compartments is original to the box as well. This wonderful Confederate rig was formerly in the collection of nationally known collector of Confederate infantryman's uniforms, weapons, and gear, Michael Kramer.

"Superstar" CS Two-Piece on Belt

Here is an absolutely exquisite piece with great history! It was owned by America's premier collector of military artifacts, Norm Flayderman, and was shown in color in Flayderman's groundbreaking work, "The Bowie Knife." It was also pictured in Steve Mullinax's, "Confederate Buckles & Plates" (1st Edition, Plate # 006). The plate has a nice curve and prominently fashioned letters. The brass exhibits a reddish tint due to the high amount of copper used in the alloy. According to Mullinax, this style of plate is commonly excavated in Virginia. The belt is in excellent condition and has no sabre hangers or wear consistent with the weight of a sabre. Instead, it has a very rare, and crudely made, bayonet frog which suggests that it may have been assembled as an NCO rig. This is a fantastic piece in superb condition possessing star status!

Banner Tassels

Are these cool or what? Original Civil War banner tassels made by Schuyler, Hartley & Graham. They can be seen in the 1864 S H & G catalogue shown here. Reasonably good condition and intact. There are a few small snags but nothing severe. Cord is 104" long and completely intact. I can't imagine owning a flag and not wanting to put these with it! A great companion piece to the flag case shown here on my website a few items below. I will offer a good deal for anyone who wants both items. They are a natural "go with."

Spade Carrier and Sling

This yet another very rare Civil War army issue accoutrement from a Cenetennial era collection. Like the axa carrier and sling this was regualtion issue for pioneers and engineers and was extremely well made with heavy bridle leather and exhibits sturdy construction. This was designed to be carried over the shoulder so the spade handle rested against the back out of the way and left the soldier's arms free. This example is unused and in mint condition. First one I've ever seen!

Axe Carrier and Sling

I have only seen this rare item in photos before--a regulation US army issue axe carrier and shoulder sling for engineers and pioneers. When slung over the shoulder the axe handle rested against the back out of the way. The leather is very thick and sturdy. Sling is mounted with typical roller buckles. This one was most likely a surplus item--probably from Bannerman's--as it exhibits no wear and mint condition. This was from an established museum collection assembled in the 1950s-1970s. This may be a one-of-a-kind item as I've never seen one before. I imagine its usefulness insured high sales from the post-war civilian market. A truly rare mint condition item!

Flag Case

This piece "knocked my socks off" when I first saw it. I haven't seen everything, by any stretch of the imagination, but I've seen quite a bit and this is a first for me! When furled, flags were rolled around their staffs and encased in a cover to protect them from the elements and from mis-handling. These covers bore the brunt of hard use and deteriorated rapidly. After the war flags were put on display and many surviving covers were discarded. This is one of the few survivors. It measures 5' 10" by 7" wide. It is made of cloth and waterproofed with a heavy black paint similar to the common US issue "tarred canvas" knapsacks. The open end has a cotton drawstring for closure. The case has an old tear that was repaired decades ago with black tape, but the case is intact otherwise. Overall condition is good, but fragile, and would be an excellent and rare piece to display alongside your battleflag.

Federal Cartridge Box

Nice early war Federal infantryman's cartridge box. Stitching and leather finish sound, flaps, belt loops, tab, finial intact and unrepaired. Tins and plate missing--easily replaced if desired. The shoulder belt was removed and attachment buckles neatly removed. (These were occassionally removed by soldiers in the field who preferred to wear the box on their accoutrement belt.) A good representative Federal box.

Fine 1851 Model Belt and Plate

Exquisite Federal officer’s 1851 Model belt rig. Plate is solid cast with integral wreath. The plate is very similar to one shown in O'Donnell & Campbell's "American Military Belt Plates" plate # 637 with impression of eagle motif on reverse of plate as worn by Gen. Sherman Miles during the Civil War. Plate is gilded and wreath is silver washed. Keeper has bench number 456. Decorative leather belt is excellent and supple enough to wear! Folder over stitched in middle of reverse. Several stitches are broken—minor. The heavy solid cast ornate belt adjuster is much like the early style sword shoulder belts of the Rev War / 1812 and early 19th century era. A great belt rig of a ranking Federal officer.
